Facemask
A facemask is used when the lower jaw is too far ahead of the upper jaw (also known as an “under bite”). This appliance helps pull the bite into alignment. A facemask consists of pads for the chin and forehead connected by a metal bar. For this appliance to work, the patient attaches orthodontic rubber bands to the braces inside of the mouth and to the face mask. This will apply pressure and help to pull the upper jaw forward. Facemasks should be worn approximately 12 hours per day for best results. Patients with facemasks should bring them to all of their appointments.
