Fixed Bite Plate
A fixed bite plate is used to help open a deep bite. It is cemented onto upper molars and is usually used for approximately 6 months. Sometimes it is used just by itself, while other times it is used with braces at the same time. This appliance will hold the front teeth and allow back teeth to continue to grow. While wearing this appliance the back teeth will not touch, which may make it difficult to chew and eat at first. If food becomes lodged under the bite plate, the patient can rinse with water to flush it out. Do not eat anything chewy or sticky. If a patient is experiencing problems with the bite plate, he/she should not pull or bend on the appliance. Patients should feel free to call the office, and someone will be happy to assist them.
